To generate highly skilled manpower in the area of biomedical research to enrich and strengthen the country's healthcare sector. To establish a super-speciality hospital with facilities to deal with emerging crisis of viral, bacterial and other infectious diseases, immunity crisis, geriatric issues, developmental disabilities, infection and inflammation, the ageing body and brain, mitochondria & neurodegenerative diseases, brain Injury and repair, mental health, metabolism, endocrinology and general health. Population health science; transplantation and regenerative medicine; genomics, children and women’s health are priorities in the long-term plan for the institute.
Mahatma Gandhi University envisaged the prospects of an Inter University Centre for Biomedical Research and Super Speciality Hospital (IUCBR & SSH) as an institution of importance and relevance to Kerala State with the object to develop high-end teaching and training in post graduate medical education in all branches of healthcare specifically pertinent to the region. The University has identified its campus at Thalappady, Kottayam as the ideal location for IUCBR & SSH, and the first phase of the construction is completed. The second phase of construction is underway, and a small outpatient department with basic facilities is operative currently. Establishment of a Centre for Biomedical Research, Centre for Communicable Diseases Control and Prevention (CCDCP), Centre for Development and Ageing, Centre for Drug Discovery, and an Advanced Immunology Centre and a fifty-bed hospital facility are currently getting initiated.
